                    YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION

COMPETITIVE

Welcome to the
EWG Soccer Developmental/
Competitive Program

Our developmental/ competitive program fields both boys and girls teams in all age groups from under 8 to under 19. These teams play teams from other associations around the region in both league play and tournaments.  Players in the U14 and below age groups must tryout.  The dates will be posted both at the field and on the web at least three weeks prior to tryouts.  During the tryouts, players rotate through a number of stations and are evaluated on criteria such as speed, ball control, shooting, etc.  Based on these ratings, the coach selects enough players to fill the team roster.  For a full description of this process along with the other rules governing the Strikers program please see our competitive rules & regulations.

The competitive season is held in parallel with the spring rec season but is administered by the state league - the RI Youth Super Liga.  The Super Liga sets the schedules for matches that are held throughout the state and are typically played on either Saturdays or Sundays.  Rescheduled matches may also be held on weekday evenings but generally the coach will ensure that most everyone is available before committing to this.  Half of the matches will be away and could be anywhere from Woonsocket to Westerly.  The parent and/or player is responsible for transportation to and from these matches.

Finally, some coaches also choose to enter their teams in indoor soccer leagues and/or outside tournaments. Participation in these is strictly voluntary and choosing not to participate will not affect the child's position on the competitive team. However, please be aware that each of these venues has different roster requirements and the coach may not be able to invite every player to participate. If you are interested in starting a second team to help ensure all players have the opportunity to play, please contact the appropriate coach.

Developmental Philosophy
If the player is a U-8 or U-10 player then he or she will be evaluated for a developmental team. The developmental philosophy is as follow: EWGYSA developmental philosophy shall be to provide players the opportunity to develop skills at an elevated level for the purpose of self-improvement and compete against the developmental programs offered through other similar associations. The EWGYSA developmental program shall be: non-result oriented, and 50% playing rule applied to all players, and strong emphasis on player participation at various positions. Such participation will benefit the EWGYSA and increase interest in the game of soccer.

Competitive Philosophy
If the player is a U-12 or above player then he or she will be evaluated for a competitive team. EWGYSA competitive philosophy shall be to bring together the most skilled players of the EWGYSA to compete against the competitive soccer programs offered through other similar associations. Such participation will raise all the participants’ skill levels, the level of play, and also contribute to the success of the School Districts Athletic Program. The EWGYSA Competitive Soccer Program shall endeavor to assemble and train the strongest teams possible for each division to best represent the EWGYSA. It is the objective to strive to win but provide each player playing time, since participants will not improve without playing.

Try-out requirements for “STRIKERS”

Developmental/Competitive Players
U8 thru U14 age groups

  • You must attend a tryout session to be held on June 12th 5:30-7:00pm for U12 players, June 12 7:00-8:30pm for U14.  June 19th 5:30-6:30pm for U8, 6:30-8:00 for U10 players. June 22nd 9-10am for u8 players, 10-11:30am for u10 players, 12:00-1:30pm for u12 players, and 1:30 -3:00pm for u14 players.   It’s highly recommended that players attend both tryout dates.  Please be sure to arrive for registration 30 minutes prior to start time so player may check in and receive evaluation number. Please bring a ball to the tryout.  Your skills will be rated/evaluated and a score assigned by an evaluator.  This score will be used to place you in the rating pool for the appropriate age and gender group.  The association may choose to use a player’s tryout rating or his/her previous Developmental/Competitive season’s coaching rating as his/her official 2012 evaluation rating.  It is not guaranteed that this score, once it is included in the rating pool, will insure a roster position.  If you don't show for a tryout you will be placed on a waiting list and may be assigned to a team subject to a coach’s selection in accordance with EWGYSA Rules and Regulations for the Developmental/Competitive Program.
  • Tryouts will be held for age groups U8 through U14, Boys and Girls, only.  More than one team may be formed; it is the intent to distribute players based on the rating pool.  Any player with a birth date not falling within an age group may not be assigned to a team in an older age group unless a waiver is requested for unusual circumstances and granted in accordance with EWGYSA Rules and Regulations for the Developmental/ Competitive Program by the Executive Committee.
  • Your parent/guardian may request on the Developmental/Competitive Registration Form that you play in an older age group.  If you score in the top one-third of the rating pool at the end of the tryout session the Director may assign you to an older age group (top one-third waiver). The Director will maintain the rating pool documents until the season is over.  Your parent/guardian may call Dawn Cabral at 401-397-3680 to answer any questions.
  • Soccer players from the Towns of Exeter and West Greenwich will be given first preference for placement. Players from outside the towns of Exeter and West Greenwich that have played in the previous season in the Developmental/Competitive program will be given the same consideration given to the residents of said towns.
  • The coach may select any player(s) from the rating pool to complete a roster.  No coach is required to roster to the maximum number.  If the rating pool exceeds maximum roster size then the minimum number of players selected from the rating pool will be 12 players for U8, 10 players for U10, 14 players for U12, and 15 players for U14.  However it is the desire of the Association to provide as many players the opportunity to be on a roster.
  • A player who does not register on time or tryout will be placed on an alternate list for assignment to a team.  It is left to the discretion of the team coach to select a player from the waiting list only after Team Creation criteria have been satisfied.

Exeter-West Greenwich Competitive Soccer 2013-2014

Overview of The Developmental/Competitive Program:

Evaluations are held in June. A registration form and a $45.00 fee must be turned in before a player can be evaluated for the developmental/ competitive program. Players in the age groups of u8, u10, u12, and u14 must attend evaluations in order to be considered for a team. If they do not or cannot attend, their name will be put on a wait list. If a child wishes to challenge up to the next age level, they must try out for both the age group they wish to challenge up to as well as the age group that is appropriate for them.

During evaluations, each player will be assigned a number and will be rated on various skills and small sided scrimmages. Once the evaluation scores are calculated and the teams have been selected, the coach assigned to the team will contact you and the developmental/ competitive practices will begin.

Fall/Winter Indoor Soccer

Typically the coach will choose to enter the team into 1-2 indoor sessions, usually held at either Teamwork’s in Warwick or World Wide of Sports in North Kingstown. Indoor is not mandatory but is highly recommended. First session generally starts in October and second session usually starts in January. Each session typically runs approximately 8-9 weeks long. Practices are held at Wawaloam School, EWG Jr. High, and at the Exeter Job Corp and are usually scheduled 1-2 times each week. Games are typically once a week.

The costs associated with indoor vary by the age group and the number of players on a roster.  The cost is calculated by what the indoor facility charges, divided by the number of players on the roster. Teamwork’s and World Wide of Sports also require each player to have an ID made for separate fee of approximate $10.00 (subject to change).
